A few days ago, Okuntakinte posted a pseudo-farewell post on Instagram. According to him, his boyfriend had left him and he was suffering from some sort of untreatable bipolar disorder. Hence, he thought it wise to unalive himself, but not just yet. As a true artist, and has to go out in a stylish manner. Unlike other suicidal people who jump off the nearest bridge or just hang themselves or something, Okuntakinte is instead going on what he calls “The Last Supper” project.

With this “Last Supper” project, fans from Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands get to invite him into their homes to prepare their favorite meals, play games and “fellowship with no judgement”. All in an attempt to “find meaning again with people while I have time still left on earth”.
While stating categorically that mental health struggles are no laughing matter and there should be no judgment for being suicidal, Okuntakinte’s approach had the makings of a publicity stunt. And it turns out it was likely just a set-up for a massive pity-party ahead, with a scandal knocking at his door.
It turns out that Okuntakinte, whose real name is Joseph Awuah-Darko, is the villain in an investigative report by Afrikmag titled “Gallery of Greed.” According to Afrikmag‘s report, Okuntakinte has been exploiting artists through his art foundation, The Noldor Residency. Artists under his wing have described him as a predator. The lawyer of one of the victims is accusing him of “unjust enrichment and breaches of contractual obligations.”

Interestingly, Afrikmag‘s report came out right around the same time Okuntakinte decided to announce his fun and stylish exit. Regular people would assume it was an attempt at guilt-tripping his accusers into being lenient with him. All while giving his fans the opportunity to beg him to stay alive.
That would probably have been cute if there weren’t exploited Ghanaian artists at the other end who deserve money for their toils and talents.
Exploiting people who trust you with their art with the guise of benevolence, funding your lifestyle with their sweat and threatening to try and kill yourself is manipulative. Okuntakinte needs to realize that suicide is not a stunt and definitely not for clout-chasing. And it is offensive to try and manipulate people in such a manner.
Hopefully his fans get to talk him out of his impending “assisted suicide” so he can pay what he owes.
