Mohammed Kudus has found himself trending on social media after missing a last-minute penalty to Niger in their last game in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers. The just-ended match was played at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars did not have much at stake as their hopes of making it to the next African Cup of Nations in Morocco had already been dashed , and they played accordingly.
Despite the Ghana team’s failure to qualify, Ghanaians were hoping to at least make some sort of statement in the last game.
The Black Stars might have had some hard luck lately due to clearly abysmal management, but the impact they have had on African football cannot be denied.
Hence, Black Stars fans were hoping to give Niger a run for their money at least, especially considering the fact that they were playing on home soil.
Granted, the stadium was embarrassingly empty. But you can bet a venue filled to capacity would have done very little to change the scoreline as the Black Stars played like a team that has lost all resolve, and just wanted to get everything over with so they can move on to performing excellently in their various clubs.
After conceding a goal to Niger in the first half, the Black Stars equalized in the second half. Fans would have been happy with a draw, but Niger got back in the lead after scoring one more goal. At this point losing was inevitable, till there was a tiny glimmer of hope of a draw, in the form of Mohammed Kudus getting awarded with a penalty.
Being the “Star Boy” as he calls himself, it was almost taken for granted that the match which was almost ended, would end in a draw and not total defeat. Unfortunately, Mohammed Kudus ended up doing an Asamoah Gyan and missed the penalty!
With no time left to redeem themselves, the match ended with the Black Stars losing by a goal. Naturally, the guy who missed the penalty is the one getting all the vitriol on social media.
Unfortunately for Kivo Gari, Mohammed Kudus being the brand ambassador has made them a target for disappointed Ghanaians to unleash their frustrations. Some called for the immediate arrest of the owner of the brand.
Some claimed the consumption of Kivo Gari had affected his eyesight, hence his inability to perform well for the Black Stars.
All these disappointed fans pointing fingers at Kivo Gari just need some closure after being emotionally abused by the Black Stars for years. They would rather blame Star Boy Mohammed Kudus and an innocent company for the disastrous performance of the Black Stars than admit that their glory days are indeed over.
In case you missed it, here is a video of Mohammed Kudus taking over the baton from Asamoah Gyan in the Missed Penalty Hall Of Fame posted by Happy Sports Gh:
