Some humans are animalistic by nature. Primal at heart with very little self control. That is why we have laws that govern us and force us to live civilly amongst each other.
It is a matter of huge concern when those with these animalistic tendencies have some amount of clout and power in society, which they use to further oppress their victims. The justice system becomes effectively useless, as all the “right” channels through which the victim can seek redress are blocked with “grease” from the abuser.
This is the case of Karen Baaba Sam. There was a ‘police warrant” calling for her immediate arrest all over social media, accusing Baaba of “unlawful child removal”. The so-called warrant was signed by one Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Superintendent of Police, Head Public Affairs Unit/CID.
One would assume this poor woman had committed some heinous crime to end up in such a predicament. That is if you have not read her gut-wrenching experience that was published on asaaseradio.com by Wilberforce Asare.

According to Baaba (who is 29 according to the police warrant), she met her abuser Nana Kwadwo Adjei in 2016 and he immediately assumed the role of her “protector”. He eventually expressed interest in a relationship leading to marriage. Apparently the marriage never happened, however, she got put in the family way two years later.
Nana Kwadwo seemed pleased with the situation till he unraveled and exposed himself for the monster he truly is in December 2018. In her own words, “He got angry because I asked where he was coming from at that time of the night. He slapped me and repeatedly kicked parts of my body, including my stomach. I was more scared for my unborn child and did everything I could to protect her from his kicks. Thankfully, I was able to get hold of my phone and call my friend Leeroy, who arrived quickly to save me and resolve the issue. He apologized and blamed the alcohol for his reaction.”

As bad as it all sounds, that was only the beginning. Nana Kwadwo continued to physically, verbally and emotionally abuse Baaba till something happened in 2024 that was the final straw. According to Baaba, she had caught Nana Kwadwo out with another woman. When she confronted him he had the other woman humiliate Baaba in public and went off with her (the other woman). He quickly sped back home and prepared an ass whooping for Baaba for failing to arrive home before him.

He beat her throughout the house and assaulted two friends from Germany who were visitors in their house for trying to protect Baaba from him. Their daughter was not spared as she also got kicked in the process and burst into tears. When Baaba tried to end the relationship he basically added financial abuse to the mix, demanding that she return the car and other valuables he got for her.

He even went ahead to send armed robbers to attack and rob her when she decided to relocate and also kidnapped their daughter by refusing to return her for over six weeks after a visit. The story Karen shares is as heartbreaking as it it lengthy. Watching someone morph from your protector into your abuser is a kind of betrayal that lingers.
But the truly heartbreaking part of this story? The system that was and is still complicit in keeping a helpless woman stuck in a cycle of abuse. According to Baaba, her brother had filed a report at the East Legon Police Station but no action was taken. Apparently like Salifu Amoako, Nana Kwadwo has been heard bragging about the influence he weilds over the police.
And it’s obviously not just a brag, considering he managed to get a police superintendent to sign a warrant demanding her arrest. It also explains how he managed to get a circuit court order granting Baaba protective custody of their daughter revoked by a district court, granting him custody instead.
Nana Kwadwo kicked this child when she was in her mother’s belly, kicked her while battering her mother, put her through emotional and psychological trauma by abruptly seperating her from her mother. But somehow a district court presided by a female judge thought it best to grant custody to him despite all evidence showing he is a danger to the child.

When the system meant to protect you turns around to arm your abuser with all the tools they need to keep you in bondage, it is a different kind of betrayal. Baaba is one of way too many women who have had to fight a battle they will never win. A fight against a system that doles justice out to only the highest bidders, and that is a crying shame.
But the shame is not with Baaba or other victims in her position. The shame is with the people in justice system who are not interested in justice at all. People like Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah who callously used his position to help further terrorize an already terrified woman by putting her out there as wanted without probing into the merits of the case. Or perhaps he knows all too well, but there is too little integrity in his service for him to be ashamed to have his name associated with injustice.
The shame is with bloggers and pages like Ghana Crimes Ltd and the bloggers-for-sale who happily circulated an innocent woman’s picture without even knowing why. The shame is with people making comments like “why did she stay so long with him?” when it is obvious she just can’t leave without her abuser going after her life. The shame is with all those who see a battered woman and proceed to help and make excuses for the perpetrators.

Nana Kwadwo Adjei must pay for his crimes. The evidence is out there for anyone who cares. Every second he is out there is testament to the fact that the Ghanaian justice system is extremely unjust and only cares about protecting unscrupulous “big men” at the expense of the vulnerable.
